Our legal team is currently accepting claims in the wake of the Alli weight loss pill recall by manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Consumer Healthcare. The pharmaceutical company has pulled the over-the-counter diet pill off shelves after reports of product tampering.

“A range of tablets and capsules of various shapes and colors were reported to be found inside bottles,” GlaxoSmithKline told CNN Money. “Additionally, some bottles inside the outer carton were missing labels and had tamper-evident seals that were not authentic.”

Alli weight loss pill recall affects U.S. and Puerto Rico retailers

This product recall is a voluntary measure taken by Alli manufacturer, which said it is collaborating with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in all efforts. The popular weight loss pills will be removed from shelves in all Puerto Rico and U.S. continental retail markets. Deborah Bolding, spokeswoman for GSK states that the company’s first priority is consumer safety, adding “We want people to look at the Alli they have at home on their medicine shelf and make sure it’s authentic.”

Consumers are urged to return any suspicious looking bottles of Alli to the manufacturer so that they can be included in the ongoing investigation. To verify the authenticity of the product, Bolding says the capsules are a turquoise blue color with a darker blue stripe containing the words “60 Orlistat.” Orlistat is the chemical compound that helps the body block fat absorption and is the active component in Alli diet pills.

The Alli recall was initiated after reports of some 20 tampered bottles came from seven different states. Thus far, there have been no reports of sickness or other ill effects from the tampered bottles.

The news may come as a blow to dieters who have found great success with Alli weight loss pills, which patients say is quite effective at curbing weight regain as it blocks about 25 percent of fat from being absorbed during digestion.

Consumers reported a variety of tablets and capsules of various shapes and colors in tampered Alli containers, according to Reuters. Quality control issues have been a long-time source of frustration among purchasers of generic drug counterparts, but even authentic brands have been affected by this problem.  GSK is still uncertain as to how or where along the chain of supply the products were tampered with, but urges those who have purchased the OTC weight loss pill to examine their capsules carefully, and report any anomalies to the company.
