Sargento Foods Listeria Cheese Recall Expands
Sargento Foods, Inc. announced this past weekend that certain packages of Ultra Thin Sliced Longhorn Colby and Chef Blends Shredded Nacho & Taco Cheese were recalled due to potential contamination of listeria monocytogenes. The items were all packaged at Sargento’s plant in Plymouth, Wisconsin. The company has also recalled five additional products at the same facility as an additional precaution. Sargento says there have been no reports of illness and are encouraging consumers to check the UPC codes on the company website to determine if they are in possession of products affected by the recall.
Other companies that have used Sargento’s products in food manufacture are issuing recalls as well. Sargento supplies Taylor Farms with cheese products; they have recalled 6,630 pounds of chicken and pork salad products that may be contaminated. Country Fresh has recalled 2,552 cases of cooking and snack products that contain Sargento cheeses. Other companies recalling products are MDS Foods and Choice Farms.
According to the Center for Disease Control, listeriosis can cause a variety of symptoms. Listeria can cause fever and diarrhea similar to other foodborne germs. Symptoms in people with invasive listeriosis, where the bacteria has spread beyond the gut, can adversely affect pregnant women, older adults and people with a weakened immunity system. Currently, listeria outbreaks are often linked to dairy products and produce.
Every year, hundreds of Americans suffer devastating injuries caused by hazardous household items, medications and food products. When pursuing a product liability claim, the law may assign blame to one or several entities along the chain of distribution, including the designer, manufacturer, distributor and retailer.
However, since both state and federal consumer laws are considered in product liability actions and be fairly complex, it’s crucial to partner with a firm that is fully experienced in this area of litigation.
