A multivehicle crash on December 2 killed a pedestrian and injured six others in Arleta.

The crash occurred near the intersection of Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Van Nuys Boulevard shortly after 9 a.m. According to preliminary police reports, a green 2003 Ford Explorer was headed eastbound on Van Nuys Boulevard and hit a black 2017 Kia Optima which was pulling out of a driveway on the south side of the boulevard.

Police believe that the driver of the Kia may have lost consciousness as a result of the collision. The Kia ran off the roadway, went east on the sidewalk, and hit a wall.

The Kia hit a pedestrian, who was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The pedestrian’s identity has not been made public.

The driver of the Kia, 28-year-old Raul Olmos of Pacoima, had severe injuries as a result of the crash. There were four passengers in the car, an adult in the front and three children in the back, ranging from 7 to 11 years old. All the passengers suffered moderate to severe injuries.

The driver of the Explorer, 38-year-old Heriberto Bautista, also of Pacoima, sustained minor injuries.

Personal Injury and Wrongful Death in Car Accidents

Pedestrian deaths account for 22% of all traffic fatalities in California.

While we cannot be certain who or what was responsible for the crash, drivers are required to watch out for pedestrians and yield the right-of-way. Drivers should never be on pedestrian sidewalks and must watch at intersections for pedestrians.

Drivers also need to obey all traffic laws, safety rules, and regulations in Southern California, including the duty to obey the speed limit, to watch traffic patterns, pedestrians, and other vehicles, and to check carefully before easing into traffic.

Drivers who cause the death of a pedestrian can face claims of wrongful death from family members of the deceased and certain other parties. Wrongful death means that some entity, such as a person or an organization, caused the death. Wrongful death claims can usually seek financial redress for the loss of a loved one, funeral expenses, loss of wages and consortium, and more.
