Tips for driving near commercial trucks
Due to their enormous size, commercial trucks require far more room to navigate turns or to come to a complete stop. Experienced personal injury lawyers routinely handle cases where a truck accident could have been prevented by the smallest of driving adjustments. While a truck operator has a duty to drive safely, following these safety tips can help avoid needless truck accidents.
- Avoid blind spots – all vehicles have areas where other vehicles on the road are obscured. These areas, known as blind spots, are typically on either side of the truck towards the back of the trailer. While commercial trucks come with plenty of mirrors, operators struggle to the area 20 feet in front of the truck and up to 200 feet behind the trailer.
- Be cautious when turning – Tractor trailers are known for their wide turning radius, and it is best to give them the space they need. This is especially true with two parallel turn lanes. It is not uncommon for a commercial truck to cut their corner too short and strike another turning vehicle.
- Pass carefully – If possible, always avoid passing a truck on the right. A truck operator has a much better field of vision on the left side of their vehicle, and the rules of the road typically require passing on the left as well.
- Use a seatbelt – Seatbelts save lives. Should you collide with a large truck, your seatbelt could be the difference between life and death.
