A fatal collision occurred today in Covina; the victim has not yet been identified.    The male victim, who is believed to be a resident near where the accident occurred, was struck and killed by a pickup truck.  California Highway patrol reports say the victim was not in the crosswalk.  Road conditions at the time of the accident were described as dark and raining; the victim was wearing dark clothing.  The driver of the pickup was not charged, and alcohol was ruled out as the cause.

Pedestrian deaths in the United States have been increasing, and traffic deaths of all kinds have been rising nationally since 2009.  According to the National Safety Council, pedestrian deaths in 2009 were 12% of all traffic deaths.  That number has risen to 15% in 2015.  In California, that percentage is 14% of the state totals.  California leads the nation in pedestrian deaths showing a significant increase in that category of 42% during the period 2009 to 2015.  Information released from Office of Traffic Safety recently stated that the rise in these accident levels may be attributed to the fact that drivers and pedestrians are increasingly distracted by technology and that there may be more people currently walking or jogging than ever before.
