UCLA Football Player Wins $35M in Redondo Beach Crash Lawsuit

UCLA Football player crashIn July 2012 Nick Ekbatani,  a former starting offensive line for UCLA, was riding his motorcycle on Pacific Coast Highway when a cab driver turned left into him at the intersection in Redondo Beach.  Mr. Ekbatani suffered severe injuries as a result, and at the time of accident was given a mere 2% chance of survival.  He subsequently underwent 13 surgeries, lost his leg and will require continuing medical care.

Numerous accidents at this intersection have been previously reported.   Ekbatani’s attorneys argued that the agency knew the intersection was dangerous and failed to respond.  Attorneys presented evidence that double yellow lines were scheduled to be painted to address line of sight problems; the lines were never painted.   A jury has ordered CalTrans, following a six-week trial, to pay $35M in damages.
