At Least Four Injured in Car-Bus-Train Accident

ambulance

On Monday, November 27, 2017, several people were injured in a multi-vehicle accident in Sun Valley, California. Few details are known at this time, but investigators have said that the crash took place at around 1:45 a.m. It occurred in the 8200 block of North San Fernando Road, at the intersection of Vineland Avenue.

Details of the train-bus crash

Officials have said that an MTA bus was struck by a passenger car at the intersection. Early reports suggest that the driver of the car ran a stop sign. The impact of the collision forced the bus onto the nearby train tracks. At that point, a Union Pacific train sideswiped the bus.

The accident could have been much worse. Fortunately, the bus was reportedly completely empty at that point. There were three passengers in the car, in addition to the driver. LAPD investigators have said that all four people were injured, and three were taken to the hospital. One of them declined medical attention.

No names have been released at this point, but it is known that one person was hospitalized in critical condition. The other two people taken to the hospital reportedly had non-life-threatening injuries. They are a 25-year-old man and a 32-year-old man.

Legal recourse in multi-vehicle accidents

With few details available at this point, it’s difficult to say what legal recourse the injured parties have. It’s possible that the passengers may have a legal claim against the driver of the car, as that person was allegedly negligent in running through the stop sign and striking the bus. If the MTA bus was parked in a hazardous manner or inappropriate location, the bus driver or the MTA may be liable for damages.

Another possibility is that the brakes of the passenger car failed due to a defect in manufacture or design. If this was the case, the injured parties may have grounds to file a lawsuit against the manufacturer.
