Actress Helen Hunt in SUV Crash

The actress Helen Hunt, known for the 1990s sitcom Mad About You and films such as As Good as It Gets, was taken to the hospital on October 16, when the SUV she was traveling in was hit by another car and rolled over on its side.

The actress, who won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in As Good as It Gets, was treated at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and released. She was in pain after the accident and emotionally shaken, according to her representative, but did not receive serious injuries.

She was apparently one of several people taken to the hospital in the crash, but the condition of the others was not known.

A rollover is caused by a vehicle being tipped and unbalanced in some way. Being struck by another vehicle is the most common cause of rollovers. SUVs are more prone to roll over than cars because their center of gravity is higher. While Hunt’s accident was only a partial rollover, she is very lucky to have escaped harm.

A rollover is a potentially life-threatening accident. According to the Insurance Information Institute, rollovers are responsible for 8.9% of fatal crashes. Crashes in which a vehicle is hit in the side are responsible for nearly 18% of fatal crashes.

Who Is Responsible for a Car Accident?

While it isn’t possible to say definitely who or what is responsible for this accident, we can offer general observations about causes of accidents – and liability for potential injuries.

Collisions at intersections are usually caused by one driver entering an intersection without having the right of way. News reports indicated that the SUV was traveling straight through an intersection and was impacted on the side. A vehicle that enters an intersection without right of way has generally violated a traffic law in doing so, such as running a red light, ignoring a stop sign, or failing to yield at a four-way stop.

If you have been hurt in an accident caused by another driver’s violation of a traffic law, you may be eligible to bring a personal injury lawsuit against the responsible party seeking compensation for losses related to your injuries, including medical bills, any wages lost from work, and pain and suffering.
