2 Dead and 7 Injured in Wrong-Way Driver Pileup

emergency vehicles

The morning of Saturday, November 1, 2020, saw two people killed and seven injured in a wrong-way driver pileup.

The crash occurred at around 7:00am. A Nissan was driving north in the southbound HOV lanes of the 405 Freeway in Orange County in Long Beach, a city in the Los Angeles metropolitan area.

The California Highway Patrol received an emergency call about the wrong-way driver and dispatched officers to the area. However, by the time the officers got to the scene, the Nissan had hit another car head-on. The other car was driving southbound in the HOV lane when it was struck by the Nissan.

Sadly, both the wrong-way driver and the other driver were pronounced dead on the scene. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s office has since identified the wrong way driver as Kaylee Perez, a 23-year-old LA native. The other driver was Manasseh Marion, a 32-year-old who lived in Long Beach.

Seven Other People Were Injured

The two deaths were not the only losses from the crash.

Since the road had poor visibility that morning, eight other cars did not see the crash in time to stop and therefore were also involved in the pile-up. From the other eight cars, two people were taken to the hospital as trauma patients, and five were brought in to treat minor injuries.

The northbound 405 lanes were closed off at Palo Verde Avenue while emergency response teams worked at the site. All traffic was diverted off the freeway onto Studebaker Road until the freeway opened back up at about 10:30am.
