Motorcyclist Dies After Collision With Audi Convertible

emergency vehicles

A motorcyclist died at the scene of a crash after the driver of an Audi convertible collided with his motorcycle in North Hollywood, at an intersection of Vineland Avenue and Vanowen Street. The motorcyclist, who was stopped at a red light, was thrown approximately 100 feet due to the impact.

The Audi then crashed into roughly three cars parked near the scene. At least one, a Toyota SUV, was turned on its side. Debris littered the area.

The motorcyclist was a male, believed to be in his mid-20s. His identity has not yet been released. The Audi’s driver, who was 24 years old, was hospitalized, but news of her injuries was not reported immediately. Authorities are considering filing criminal charges.

The crash occurred at roughly 5:30 a.m.

Liability in a Motorcycle Accident

Who is liable in a motorcycle accident? Although the recent collision between a motorcyclist and the driver of a car is still under investigation, some general comments on motorcycle accidents can be made.

Drivers of all vehicles are responsible for following all traffic laws and principles of safe driving, all the time. Any driver, of any vehicle, who violates laws or principles of safe driving can be held liable for causing an accident if the accident stems from those violations.

Running a red light, for example, is always the fault of the driver who ran it, whether the driver is behind the wheel of a car or sitting on a motorcycle. The only exception is if mechanical or other malfunction rendered the car unable to stop, despite the driver’s efforts. If that is the case, the manufacturer or other responsible party might be liable for the accident.

Unfortunately motorcyclists can be subject to much more harm in the case of an accident, because motorcycles are both smaller and less protected than cars and other vehicles. While motorcyclists are required to wear helmets in California, an accident like the one in early June can be fatal even if a motorcyclist is wearing a helmet.
