Early Wednesday morning, emergency crews were dispatched to a multi vehicle accident on Highway 1 near Firefighter Road.  The severity of the incident forced the closure of the highway for several hours before it could be cleared.

Six vehicles were involved in the crash.   According to reports, one vehicle lost control and eventually came to a stop blocking the northbound lanes.  This set off a chain of events involving several subsequent collisions.  The other vehicles traveling behind  were not able to stop to avoid colliding with the first crash victims; cars traveling in the  northbound lanes were forced into the southbound lanes.  Four people sustained injuries and were treated at local hospitals.  Three others had minor injuries and declined medical treatment.  The crash is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
