A multi-car pileup sent five to the hospital and closed a busy part of the 110 Freeway in Los Angeles for nearly an hour during a busy morning rush hour.

The October 27 accident involved as many as five vehicles and a tractor-trailer and backed up morning rush hour traffic in downtown Los Angeles for miles.

LA freeway backed up for miles

The recent accident occurred at around 5:30 a.m. on October 27, closing all northbound lanes on State Route 110. Although two lanes opened up around an hour after the incident, and additional lanes were opened up approximately 30 minutes later, rush hour traffic endured a significant backup for many hours. Even the southbound lanes of the freeway were exceptionally slow between Vernon and Florence Avenues. The crash involved at least five vehicles and sent five motorists to area hospitals with unspecified injuries.

At this time, it is unclear exactly what caused the accident. California Highway Patrol was at the scene shortly after the crash and an investigation is ongoing. There is no word as to the severity of injuries or whether charges might be filed once fault for the accident can be determined.

Motor vehicle accidents in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is no stranger to serious motor vehicle accidents. In 2012, the city saw nearly 30,000 crashes involving an injury or fatality, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. Approximately 10 percent of those crashes occurred at night, between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. More than 10 percent were related to high speeds and more than one-third of all crashes involving arrests were due to driving under the influence or DUI.

With the heavy traffic that plagues Los Angeles daily, crashes like this can throw a significant monkey wrench into the ability to commute through the city for work or school. This one accident, which only involved a single roadway in downtown Los Angeles, interfered with traffic flow for many hours, affecting residents’ ability to conduct their daily business. Even worse, these incidents are often accompanied by extensive damage to motor vehicles and serious car accident injuries that can impact a person’s ability to work and perform other activities.

Impact of traffic accidents

Traffic accidents can occur without warning, completely changing the course of your day and even your life. Injuries from these accidents can be severe, requiring substantial medical treatment and rehabilitation to overcome. Some accident victims suffer the financial consequences of an inability to work, combined with medical expenses that can become a severe strain on even the most stable families.

If the accident occurs through no fault of your own, the ramifications can be that much more difficult to endure. In these situations, the pursuit of legal compensation through a Los Angeles personal injury lawyer for injuries, medical expenses and non-economic losses can make all the difference between the ability to move forward with your life and getting stuck in the repercussions of the accident.
