Five people were injured in a Koreatown crash in the early morning hours of November 22. All were hospitalized, two in critical condition. Two other victims were in serious condition and one was in fair condition.

The two-vehicle accident occurred around 5:07 a.m. at the intersection of Beverly Boulevard and N. Western Avenue. One vehicle was twisted around a traffic pole at the intersection. The other car was seriously damaged as well.

Both police and firefighters were called to the scene. The Los Angeles Fire Department fought to extricate one trapped occupant from a car, and emergency personnel could be seen attending to another victim on a gurney.

There was no indication of the causes of the accident when news reports were filed.

Determining Responsibility for an Accident

While nothing is known of the causes of the Koreatown accident, some general observations can be made about responsibility for vehicle accidents.

Drivers have a duty of care to the public to operate their cars in a safe manner, or in a way that a reasonably prudent person would consider safe. They need to obey all laws. They need to maintain and repair their cars to keep them in good working order.

If an accident is caused by driving unsafely or violating the law in some way, or a combination of the two, the at-fault driver can be said to have breached the duty of care owed to the public. If so, they are negligent and can be held legally responsible for injuries and other harm done in an accident.

Other parties can be responsible for accidents as well. If accidents happen because parts of the car do not operate properly or failed, then the responsibility could lie with the vehicle manufacturer or a supplier of component parts. If accidents happen because traffic lights are not working, the government entities responsible for maintaining the roads may be at fault.

The causes of car accidents can be complex. They may be difficult to determine, especially if there are few witnesses. Police reports can help to establish the causes of an accident, but it can also be advantageous to work with a law firm’s investigative team to figure out all the factors that went into causing an accident.
