Interstate 5 was the scene of yet another fatal collision last week, when 28 year-old Jillian Sedivec crashed into a big rig on December 10. The deadly California auto accident claimed the life of both the driver and her four-year old daughter, Savannah Wilson, according to police reports.

Sedivec was driving a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) northbound in San Diego County when she slammed into a grocery truck, which was stopped in a line of traffic near the San Onofre Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility. The driver of the truck was unharmed in the crash, and it’s uncertain if he has consulted an attorney for legal advice.

Horrific car accident on I-5 results in wrongful death

The California Highway Patrol is still investigating the cause of the accident, but early sources say it’s likely that alcohol did not play a role in the premature death of the San Diego woman and her child. However, officials did confirm that the driver did not swerve or apply the SUV’s brakes before hitting the big rig.

A memorial fund was established for the victims shortly after the incident to collect donations for surviving family members. According to NBC news San Diego, in less than two days, the fund has amassed more than $4,300 in donations.

The following heart-felt message was posted on the fundraising account:

“One December 10th, 2013 Jillian a single mother and her 4-year-old daughter Savanah were involved in a horrible and fatal traffic accident north of Oceanside, California. The fund is for Jillian’s surviving 8-year-old daughter Cydney and to help with the funeral and memorial expenses. The entire family appreciates everyone’s thoughts and prayers as they endure this difficult time.”

The West coast’s main interstate highway, I-5 serves some of California’s most populous cities including Los Angeles, Sacramento and San Diego. One look at recent traffic reports and you’ll see that the interstate has one of the highest rates of car accidents and fatalities, due to its heavy congestion and large numbers of semi-trucks and big rigs.

A large portion of car accidents in and around LA involve tractor trailers and trucks, which are notorious for their poor visibility, frequent stops and overworked drivers. Regular vehicles, even high-clearance SUVs, rarely stand a chance in rear end or head-on collisions with these oversized rigs, as was the case in this recent tragedy.
