Cheerleader Team Bus in Fiery Crash with Big Rig in California

A bus carrying thirty members of a Phoenix cheerleading team collided with a tractor trailer near Mecca on Interstate 10. Westbound lanes were closed backing up traffic for several hours. The bus was headed back to Arizona from a cheerleading camp at UCLA.
The crash occurred around 4:15 pm on eastbound I-10. The bus driver was reported to have been traveling in the No 1 lane approaching stopped traffic. The driver of the truck was traveling eastbound in a semi-truck with two trailers at a speed that was determined to be too fast to stop. The truck driver tried to brake, but collided with the rear of the tour bus. Ultimately the truck crossed the center median and came to a stop blocking the westbound lanes. The driver of the truck was able to escape the vehicle before it burst into flames. Four of the young bus passengers were taken to a nearby hospital – none with serious injuries. Approximately six hours after the crash, the lanes were reopened. Investigations are expected to continue.
