Cause of Multi-Car Big Rig Crash on 5 Freeway Remains Undetermined

The sequence of events that caused the multi vehicle crash and explosion that occurred earlier this week on the I5 freeway near Griffith Park has yet to be determined by investigators. The driver of the Freightliner truck that had started the series of events apparently had crossed all northbound lanes of the 5 Freeway before crashing into the other vehicles involved. It then continued across a center divider in the southbound lanes and colliding into the oncoming traffic. Whether or not alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor also remains under investigation. CHP officers will continue to search out witnesses for further questioning.
The one fatality was the driver inside the big rig hauling the cargo trailer; it had not been determined whether he had been wearing a seat belt. Current coroner reports have not yet identified the deceased individual likely due to the fire damage to the body. All lanes of the freeway were reopened at 7:30 pm after the hazmat and cleanup crews had completed clearing the roadway. No further details have been released as to the condition of the others injured in the accident.
