A pedestrian knock-down in Hollywood sent a mother and her daughter to the hospital yesterday. The incident took place at the Museum of Broken Relationships where, authorities say, a suspected drunk driver ran over two female pedestrians on the sidewalk, before plowing into the building.

Los Angeles police Sergeant Ben Zucker confirmed that the mother was in critical but stable condition, while her daughter fared better with only minor injuries. A friend of the victims told CBS Long Angeles that both women feel incredibly grateful to have survived the terrifying incident. Both were admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where the mother was treated for internal injuries and deep lacerations.

Authorities say the accident took place shortly after 3 p.m. at the 6700 block of Hollywood Boulevard.

Mother and daughter hit by drunk driver

The perpetrator was soon arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) and hit-and-run following the crash. According to Los Angeles police, the woman had — just moments earlier — been involved in another accident just a block away from the museum at Las Palmas Avenue. Frightened, the suspect attempted to flee the scene in her vehicle. She then turned onto McCadden, where she lost control of her black Audi and veered onto the sidewalk, hitting the two women and then the side of the museum building.

The driver of the Audi, estimated to be in her 30s, was not injured in the collision. After smashing into the museum, she then tried to flee the scene on foot, but was apprehended by police and taken into custody.

LAPD officer Aareon Jefferson told local media sources that it was later confirmed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Recourse for victims of DUI accidents

The civil court system allows victims of drunk driving accidents to seek legal compensation for all injuries and economic losses suffered.  If the suspect is convicted of DWI or DUI in California, victims have the right to pursue a personal injury claim immediately, regardless if criminal actions are also pending.

Litigation can seek to recover compensation for:

  • Hospital and medical bills
  • Lost income
  • Lost earning ability
  • Emotional trauma
  • Physical pain and suffering
  • Loss of consortium
  • Punitive (exemplary) damages to punish the defendant
